「もはやオリジナリティなものなど存在しない」という警句は過激なように見えて希望の灯にも感じられます。なぜなら「我々に残されているのは“無限の組み合わせ”である」と後に続くからです。この“編集”による可能性は、紅輪のアートディレクターであり作陶者の若竹純司が常々心の肝に据えている作法です。“lucie”は20世紀イギリスを代表する陶芸家ルーシー・リーの造形感覚と若竹純司の色彩感覚を衝突させたアイテムです。ルーシー・リーの作品には日本陶芸の侘寂、ミニマリズムといった精神が息づいています。彼女に日本的美意識の影響を与えたのは、スタジオ・ポッテリー運動を興したバーナード・リーチです。日本で学び、柳宗悦や濱田庄司と深い交流を持ち、民藝運動において西洋と東洋の重要な架け橋となりました。紅輪のプロダクトを見て、民藝の美意識を感じる方は少ないかもしれません。しかし、紅輪はもちろん民藝の方角も見ていきます。西洋と東洋を結ぶ高架橋。ぐるりぐるり循環する道を“lucie”は辿ります。その道程で、朝夕に映る南北の景色をも眺めることになるでしょう。

The warning “Originality no longer exists” may seem extreme, but it can also feel like a beacon of hope. This is because it is followed by the notion that “what remains for us is an ‘infinite combination’.” This possibility through “editing” is a principle that Junji Wakatake, the art director and ceramic artist of  kōrin, always keeps close to his heart. “lucie” is an item that collides the sense of form of Lucie Rie, a representative 20th-century British ceramic artist, with Junji Wakatake’s sense of color. Lucie Rie’s works are imbued with the spirit of Japanese pottery, such as wabi-sabi and minimalism. The person who influenced her with the Japanese aesthetic was Bernard Leach, who initiated the studio pottery movement. Leach studied in Japan, developed deep connections with Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, and became an essential bridge between the East and the West in the Mingei movement. It may be rare for people to sense the aesthetic of Mingei when looking at kōrin’s products. However, kōrin certainly keeps an eye on the direction of Mingei. “lucie” traverses the overpass that connects the West and the East. Along this journey, it will also gaze upon the northern and southern landscapes that reflect in the morning and evening.
